We live in insane digital world right now. We are addicted to our cellphones and computers. Nothing wrong with that(I personally don't know how I would survive without my phone), but no matter how apps are shifting paper crafts, I still get more productive with paper planner.
You know how our teachers always said: "Once you write it down, you will remember"
It is true! I am so busy over the week that once I make a plan I instantly forget it. Our mind is so overloaded that we just can't remember everything. This is where paper planner comes in.
We have multiple apps/reminders for our schedule, but I never stick to it. Is it because the design is not appealing or because it has annoying ringtones? Or because you write in a certain font and you have pink colour for tags, but not magenta?
I really don't know. It doesn't work for me.
I believe in: ''Once you write it down, it exists and it doesn't take the space in your brain anymore.''
I use my own planner I designed under the name Yummy Styled.
It is an undated planner with a lot of space for any info you have.
Once you open it, the OOD just pops up!
Beside my planner I always carry post it notes, for random doodles.
So how do I write down my plans/organise everything?
I start by making doodles on a post it note. I cross out my plans or tasks multiple times before writing it down to planner. This way I avoid mistakes and over correcting them too.
Once I make up my mind, then I start planning my week.
I always use one pen and pencil. I write my ''optional'' plans with pencil and the rest with pen.
Since I am a designer, I often change my priorities regarding the importance of the work.
It sounds weird but I often don't really use date system. Usually just write down my plans that I know I have to do in particular week. If needed I fill up the dates. Thats why I use an undated planner. It gives you free choice of what you want to do with the planning system of your planner.
A lot of dated planners have really no space whatsoever for all the tasks that we have. (But hey, not everybody is a designer with x plans).
What I love the most about paper planners? The monthly designs!
Omg, I am obsessed with the "starting cover of a month"..and if it has an inspirational quote thats a plus!
It just makes me even more creative and kind of soakes me into the colours and lines.
I always like to write down my monthly motivation. It keeps me going and reminds me of my goals even when I feel down.
What is really important to me is that I track hours of sleep and hours of work. This way I get remembered that I work too much(can't help myself) or don't sleep enough.
It helps you evaluate your working hours and how much you charge for your work. Try tracking your working hours and you will start to appreciate your effort.
Human touch, word and voice are magic. The world can fire up however it wants, but people are the essence of life we live everyday.
In our case, what I am trying to say is that paper planner has a form, a human touch to it.
All the phone apps that I used can't be in a a5 sheet or a4 sheet, because they work in a frame of our phone size. They can't be written with human hand, that trained years before it started to write.
It doesn't have significant handwriting or doesn't write small/big/beautiful or messy.
It writes in Arial or Times New Roman.
Organise your life how you want to live it everyday.
